“We warmly welcome today’s announcement that the government will make Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) compulsory in all secondary schools and will pave the way for personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education to be required in all primary and secondary schools. Healthy relationships are vital to our wellbeing and every young person has the right to high quality RSE. As well as teaching important relationship skills, it can prepare young people to navigate relationships with choice, control and consent. “
“The re-naming of the secondary-school subject Sex and Relationships Education to Relationships and Sex Education rightly emphasizes the central importance of healthy relationships. These announcements are things which Relate and other experts have long called for, and we are delighted the government has listened.
We hope that the government will also consider the importance of confident, trained, expert staff in delivering high quality relationships education, when developing the regulations and statutory guidance, including the potential role that specialist teachers and the Third Sector can play.”
